Join us in celebrating adopt a rescued rabbit month!
We encourage people to adopt from our local rescue group Hoppy Homes, giving these furry companions the gift of a forever home and the chance to live a happy and healthy life.
By going through a rescue group, you can find benefits for both yourself and your furry friend. Their knowledgeable volunteers can help you find a match for your family by placing you with a bun who has shown their big personality and will be a good fit for their forever home. By going through a rescue organization, you can also benefit financially. The rescue covers the cost of your new companion’s spay or neuter. The volunteers within these organizations are more than happy to help you pick the right bun and answer any questions you may have. However, it is important to take the time to do your own research and figure out what these furry friends need as a diet, exercise, and stimulation. House rabbits are intelligent and require interaction with other buns, adequate exercise, and access to proper medical care. The right combination of hay, pellets, leafy greens and fruits are also necessary to maintain a healthy weight.
Bunnies are a long term commitment with a lifespan of 10-12 years, so it is important to make an educated decision before deciding to add one to your family. Since joining the team at Sunrise Animal Hospital in 2011, I have become a huge fan of the Hoppy Homes organization because of the dedication and compassion that its volunteers have shown. They have also inspired me to become a volunteer as well. It was this decision that brought my soulmate bunny into my life. Sweeney was adopted from there in February of 2013. He was the sweetest bunny that captured the hearts of everyone he met. He was even a local celebrity who was featured in the Newfoundland show Land and Sea just last year!
All of our bunnies have been litter trained, so they are free roaming around the household. It gives them lots of space to play and get their needed exercise, and have fun with each other. Our home is full of love since adopting all four of our buns, and it is a rewarding experience to rescue a pet in need.
